For all of his 39 years, he had been extremely active and enjoyed all kinds of outdoor activities. It was a huge blow to suddenly be confined to a wheelchair, unable even to stand up. But FDR handled his new limits very well. He was not depressed and did not want anyone’s pity. Instead he was determined to continue making his life matter. It also helped that Eleanor did not treat him like an invalid. In February 1922, FDR was fitted with steel leg braces. These seven-pound braces went from the hips all the way down to the feet (eventually he got lighter braces).

Unfortunately, there was little anyone could do for polio. There was no cure. The only thing that might help FDR feel better was hot baths. Under water, FDR would be able to possibly coax a little movement from his lower body. Though the specialist could not predict how severe the long-term effects would be, he did say that patients’ progress depended on their outlook and determination. Eleanor was shocked when the doctor sent a bill of $ı,000 for his services. During the first weeks, FDR was helpless, reduced to lying on his back.

By 1924, the buoyant effect of the water helped FDR stand up in shoulder-deep water without the use of leg braces. He noted that as time passed, he could stand in slightly more shallow water—first chin-deep, then shoulder-deep, then in water that went up to his armpits. When FDR returned to Warm Springs in April 1925, he saw that the article that mentioned Warm Springs had prompted other polio sufferers to visit. People had heard of his progress and began to make the pilgrimage there. He was pleased to see this, but he also realized that the current Warm Springs facility was in no shape to handle many visitors.
